Who would win in a fight? Iron Man or Batman?

Popular opinion is that Iron Man will win. However, of course, there's no sure way to predict a winner. We have here two extremely intelligent, extremely capable humans, and there is no telling what would happen if we pitted them against each other.
Or is there?
Batman fans argument:
  1. Batman can take out Iron Man's suit with EMP.
  2. Batman can make armoured suits too.
  3. Batman has a Justice Buster suit.
  4. The Batman factor
Iron Man fans (counter-)argument:
  1. Iron Man's suit is immune to EMP.
  2. Iron Man can make far better armoured suits than Batman.
  3. Iron Man has a Hulkbuster suit (and a Thorbuster suit, and some more).
  4. The Bleeding Edge armour.

The debate:
Yes, it's true that Iron Man's suits (all except the older ones) are immune to EMP or any kind of electromagnetic interference.
It's no news that Batman can make armoured suits too. He's been doing this for a while. And now, it's even on the big screen (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer).
However, it's also true that the efficiency and scale of Iron Man's suits is much better. Batman still doesn't have anything matching Iron Man's arc reactor technology.

Iron Man
At face value, the debate has Batman in a severely inferior position. What is (apparently) the nail in the coffin is the array of Iron Man's latest suits, arguably the most popular of which is his Bleeding Edge Armor.

  • The Bleeding Edge armour made Iron Man ā€œthe most powerful hero on Earthā€ (obviously this is considering mortals only).
  • The Bleeding Edge armour is made wholly of nanites, and is stored within Stark's body. It is controlled completely by Stark's thoughts, making it immune to any deactivation techniques one can possibly devise.
However, the Bleeding Edge armour is no longer functional. It was removed from Stark's body by Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and completely disabled so as to prevent reverse engineering.
Although, Stark's latest suit is even more advanced (even though it is externally stored and not as nanites). Check out Iron Man Model 51, the Endo-Sym armour.

Iron Man even has a Phoenix Buster armour. Yeah, no shit. THE Phoenix, the primal cosmic force that took over Jean Grey.

Although, to be fair, this is not a suit that can actually defeat the Phoenix. It makes use of disruptors to, well, disrupt the Phoenix force and incapacitate it.
So, yeah, Iron Man has quite a mighty arsenal, no doubt.

Now, on to Batman.

In JLA's tower of Babel, it was revealed that Batman has contingency plans to take down any and every member of the JLA if they ever go rogue.
Not to mention, Bruce Wayne has built some nasty little mean machines himself. A popular (and badass) fan favourite is the Hellbat armour:

  • The Hellbat was forged in the sun by Superman, with inputs from the other Justice League members as well
  • It is powerful enough to wipe the floor with Kalibak (son of Darkseid), and later go stand up to Darkseid himself. However, as expected, this armour, too, got trashed by Darkseid, much like how the Thorbuster got trashed by Thor
  • The Hellbat also has advanced stealth capabilities
Additionally, Batman also has the stealth suit, a piece of tech so incredible that even Superman, whose vision is absolute, canā€™t detect it.

And then, of course, thereā€™s the ultimate counter-measure for when the Justice League gets compromised. The Fenrir suit, or, the Justice buster:

  • Took down Cyborg
  • Took down Flash
  • Took down Aquaman
  • Took down Green Lantern
  • Took down Wonder Woman
  • Then even fought with Superman for a while (but eventually got ripped apart by the Kryptonian)

The bottomline:
  • Iron Man built suits to fight Hulk and Thor.
  • Batman built suits to fight Darkseid and Superman.
  • Both suits lost, but not before putting up a damn good fight. As it turns out, Batman canā€™t be sold short when it comes to making armoured suits either
  • Although Iron Man's current suits are thought-controlled, he can still be taken down if his power source is disabled. This, however, is a seemingly impossible task
  • Unfortunately, Iron Man's opponent is a man for whom nothing seems impossible. Batman is capable of re-engineering kryptonite, which is an alien element. Keeping that in mind, disabling a man-made reactor doesn't sound impossible
  • Even so, none of that can be done without Batman getting the opportunity to adequately study his opponent

1) In a straight-up, impromptu fight, Iron Man most likely wins.
He still has an obvious upper hand with the Endo-Sym, which is much more agile and likely just as strong (brute strength and durability-wise) as the Hellbat and Justice Buster.
2) However, given some time for preparation, the tide could change drastically.
  • Iron Man is a beast with prep time. But in this case, Batman is a weaker adversary, not the kind he usually fights.
  • Tony Stark is no doubt more intelligent than Bruce Wayne.
  • But no amount of prep time can save Iron Man from Batmanā€™s cunning and deviousness.
    • Iron Man has strategies; Batman has tactics.
    • Iron Man reads computer screens; Batman reads people.
    • Iron Man may be more intelligent, but Batman is infinitely smarter.
    • Tony Stark plays the odds. Bruce Wayne plays the man.
Itā€™s quite simple. Batman still has the disadvantage in raw power, even with prep time. He wonā€™t fight straight up. Heā€™ll resort to stealth, misdirection, deceit, and who knows what else.

The verdict
If itā€™s a straight-up duel youā€™re looking for, my money is on Iron Man, prep or no prep.
But if itā€™s an all-out battle with no holds barred, Iron Man wonā€™t wonā€™t know what hit him. Literally.
Duelling is not Batmanā€™s style. Heā€™s more likely to start off with the stealth suit.
